Block Diagram

The ATV receiver is a collection of off the shelf components and a custom controller board.  The major subsystems include the following.

Power  Fuses, reverse polarity diodes, and a transient suppressor protect the hardware from the harsh automotive electrical environment.

S-Band Receiver  The S-Band receiver is a common, low cost Microwave module manufactured by Comtech.  It is available from a number of on-line vendors for less than $100.  It features an SMA input connector, center conductor DC power for an LNA, good sensitivity, and programmable frequency through an I2C interface.

Video LCD  An Optrex 7" LCD module that features analog NTSC composite and S-Video input.  This model of display (T-51440GL070HU-FW-AC) is commonly used in automotive navigation and entertainment centers.  It can be purchased for less than $200.

2 x 20 LCD  The model C-51505NFQJ-LB-AE Optrex display is a character mode blue, backlit display used for frequency and status information.  It can be purchased for around $25.

Controller  The controller is a custom board with an embedded process (PIC 18F252), digital I/O, and analog outputs to control he LCD displays, user interface, and receiver.  The video LCD brightness, contrast, chroma level (color), phase (tint), back light brightness are all controlled digitally rather than through conventional, separate controls.

User Interface Buttons  3 push buttons used for operator control.
