Power Sources

The choice of primary power (batteries) for a extreme environmental conditions is limited.  Most battery technology won't work reliably below -10°C or have a low power to weight ratio.  Until recently, the choice for reliable power was limited to a BA-5590 battery pack or more likely the cells within the pack.  The BA-5590 battery pack utilizes LiSO2 cells.  Each cell produces a nominal 3.0 VDC at 7.2AH.

Extracting the cells from the BA-5590 is rather tedious.  The cells are epoxied into place to prevent movement.  When removing the cells, care must be exercised to prevent damage to the metal shell.  The batteries are pressurized to 45 PSI and will vent a noxious gas cloud if punctured.  Disposal is difficult because the cells contain Lithium and must be disposed of as hazardous waste.
