Designing a robust, reliable package that is light weight is a challenge. The Pico Beacon utilizes the electronics circuit board as a structural member. The GPS antenna is attached to the PCB at the top with 4-40 hardware. A more robust 0.062" thick PCB was chosen rather than the more common 0.032" PCB. This increased the size of RF traces, but allowed the use of the PCB as the structural member. Common 0.025" thick aluminum was cut and bent to form the GPS ground plane and PCB shield cover.
