Acronyms

It wouldn't be GNU without as many acronyms as possible.  Here is a list from GNU Radio pages.

AM - Amplitude Modulation

ATIS - Automatic Terminal Information Service is a broadcast recording that contains information on airport conditions such as winds, which runways are in use, and other safety related information.  Before pilots contact the control tower or approach control associated with the airport, they listen to the ATIS recording for basic information.

dBm
- A logarithmic unit of RF measurement.  Decibels referenced to one milliwatt into 50 ohms.  0 dBm = 1 milliwatt and -30 dBm = .001 milliwatt.

DSSS
- Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum

FM
- Frequency Modulation

FFZ - Airport identifier for Falcon Field Airport located in Mesa, AZ

GPS
- Global Positioning System - A system of satellites, computers, and receivers that is able to determine the latitude and longitude of a receiver on Earth by calculating the time difference for signals from different satellites to reach the receiver.

HF
- High Frequency RF band generally defined as an RF in the range 3 to 30MHz

LSB
- Lower Side Band.

NBFM
- Narrow Band Frequency Modulation.  Typically 25KHz channels used for FRS, amateur, and public service voice.


NWS
- The National Weather Service broadcast weather information on a number of VHF frequencies around the country.

OTA
- Over The Air as in captured with an antenna.

SSB
- Single Side Band transmission commonly use by amateur radio operators in the HF band.  The carrier and opposite side band is removed so all the transmit power is in the desired signal.

TS-2000X
- Kenwood amateur radio transceiver that is capable of operation in the HF bands, as well as several VHF/UHF/L-band frequencies.

USB
- Upper Side Band.
