Ground
Control - Part 2
Shown
below is the handheld computer that provides a command and control user
interface. The computer communicates using a Bluetooth wireless
module to the ground command and control MODEM. A handheld computer
offers the following advantages.
Smaller
and more rugged than a conventional laptop or notebook computer. A
wireless module allows the operator to walk away from the ground control
and control MODEM.
The
back lit, color display is visible in direct sunlight as well as night
conditions.
Lower
cost than a laptop or notebook computer.
No
cost development environment available from Microsoft
and the Pocket PC operating system can be replaced with Linux.
Although I'm not a big fan of WinDoze and its ever present "Blue
Screen of Death", the Windows CE operating system has been
reliable. In the many hours of use, I've never had to reboot the
system. The application program has never locked up or crashed other
than through my own programming problems.
Finally,
the computer just looks cool.
