Propagation

Design Depreciated  - This design has been replaced with the next version of the HF-APRS hardware, however, this section is retained for historical reference.

There are many excellent articles and reference available on HF propagation.  The following charts were generated to determine the best frequency to monitor based on your location in the United States.  The charts show the estimated SNR based on a launch out of Arizona with 1 watt of output power into a vertical dipole.  The charts assume a similar, low gain antenna at your receive site.  Any improvement in the receive antenna will yield better copy of the signal.

The propagation model is based on a low sun spot level and a summer (July) launch.  The VOACAP propagation program is available from US Department of Commerce.  A refined application with an improved user interface and maps is available from Tabor Software.

Even though these maps only outline the United States, Canada, Mexico, and South America, we invite operators from around the world to listen.  The magic of HF is such that you never can really predict how far the signal will travel and at what frequencies.

Thanks to Kent, AB7OA, for generating these charts.
